PORTLAND, MAINE (September 27, 2004) The Shipyard Brewing
Company's Old Thumper Extra Special Ale has been honored
with top awards from two of the most prestigious California
beer events.
The Los Angeles County Fair awarded Old Thumper Best in
Show as well as 1st place in the English Bitter category.
The LA County Fair is the largest county Fair in North America.
Last month, the California Brewers Festival awarded Old
Thumper 1st Place among English Pale Ales.
"Old Thumper also won first place at the West Coast
Brewers Festival earlier this year'" noted Mike Carey,
Shipyard's west coast sales representative. "The Shipyard
brand is growing strong here in California and these awards
have certainly caused more people to take notice."
Additionally, Celebrator Beer News just announced a five
star rating for Old Thumper.
" Old Thumper got our highest rating of five stars and
joined an elite group of fine beers," remarked publisher
Tom Dalldorf. The results will be published in the October
/ November issue.
"This beer has been winning awards in England since
I first began brewing it 20 years ago with Peter Austin at
Ringwood Brewery," said Alan Pugsley, master brewer. "I'm
particularly proud that Shipyard's team of brewers has been
able to consistently produce the same caliber award-winning
ale that is brewed in England."
Old Thumper Extra Special Ale is a British Grand Champion
beer created in 1979 by veteran British brewer, Peter Austin,
founder of Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England and mentor
to Shipyard's Master Brewer, Alan Pugsley. After 15 years
of being brewed exclusively by Ringwood, this non-traditional
English bitter was introduced to America by The Shipyard
Brewing Company in 1994.
Shipyard also just took home top awards from the LA County
Fair for Sea Dog Bluepaw, which received a Bronze in the
Fruit and Vegetable Beer category, and Shipyard IPA, which
was awarded a Bronze in the English-Style India Pale Ale
category.
