The Tohu Story

The only indigenously-produced New Zealand wine being exported to the United States, Tohu is owned by three Maori tribal groups, the Wakatu Incorporation, Ngati Rarua Atiawa Iwi Trust and Wi Pere Trust. Maori are a modern people who uphold traditional values. They maintain their respect for the land and for the wise stewardship of the ancestors who preserved it and have a highly developed sense of communal and familial responsibility.

Tohu has vineyards in Gisborne on the warmer North Island of New Zealand and in Marlborough on the cooler South Island. It recently acquired 200 additional acres in Marlborough which it will plant this year.

Wines currently available in the U.S. market include the Gisborne Chardonnay (rated 91 by the Wine Enthusiast), Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Tohu Wines in the News

Tohu Pinot Noir Best on the Palate in 2007
The Tennessean - Jan 2008
Our 2007 wine of the year is the 2006 Tohu Marlborough Pinot Noir, a New Zealand wine that was a great value for the price. After some debate, the Tohu narrowly beat out the Cycles Gladiator Syrah -- by one vote among our panel members - that was also a tremendous value. The wines were chosen from among those we tasted in 2007, giving primary attention to the best bang for the buck.

Review of Tohu 2005 Pinot Noir (PDF)
YELLOW MAGAZINE - SEPT 2007
"New Zealand may best be regarded for its white wines but this is quite a tasty Pinot Noir. This varietal is from Tohu, 'the first indigenous branded wine to be produced for export' and offers the scent of plums in its bouquet while its body flows softly with notes of blackberry, chocolate and a slight taste of coffee. There is an underlying hint of pepper and tobacco in this well-balanced Marlborough entry that lands with a soft pleasing finish."

Tohu Pinot Noir Earns 89-Point Rating in Wine Enthusiast
Wine Enthusiast - March 2007
"Like many 2005’s this is a considerable step up from the previous vintage, boasting better concentration and ripeness than the somewhat lackluster 2004 vintage. While there is a lot of savory notes of cola, meat and spice to this wine, it gets a lift on the finish from hints of raspberry and vanilla."

Indigenous Stock Rising (PDF)
New Zealand Magazine - June/July 2006
"A resurgence of Maori culture and tradition is sweeping through New Zealand to the delight of many in New Zealand and overseas. Furthermore, basing business ventures on Maori values has proven very successful for companies like Tohu Wine, Wakatu Corporation and Ngai Tahu Holdings."
