Sea Dog Brewing Company History

The tale of Sea Dog Brewing Company’s namesake and mascot begins not with a beer, but with a Great Pyrenees named Barney. The friendly dog and brew master’s apprentice insisted on diligently posting guard over the brewing kettle as it boiled. Barney, despite his breed’s aversion to water, was an avid sailor, earning him the nickname “Sea Dog.” It only seemed fitting to name this coastal Maine brewery after its faithful four-legged companion.

Sea Dog Brewing Co. brews beers of the highest quality in the traditional English style of using two-row malted barley and top-fermenting Ringwood yeast. This ensures the company’s beers offer a distinctive, refreshing taste with a crisp finish.

Established in 1993, the company has since opened a second brewing facility in Clearwater, Florida. Curious enthusiasts can tour both locations, or visit brewpubs in Maine, New Hampshire and Florida. Their beers have been honored at both the California Brewers Festival and the West Coast Brewers Festival.
