History of Korbinian

Saint Korbinian was a Frankish bishop who erected the Benedictine monastery on Freising hill. Saint Korbinian is known for saddling a bear who killed his pack horse and riding the bear into Rome. Korbinian’s bear has become the symbol of Freising. There is also a tale told on the hills of Friesing of a drought that ravaged Bavaria in 1040. When the monks wanted to brew beer, there was no water to spare. Korbinian received a vision to take a stake and drive it into a rock and water would flow. Korbinian did this and from the rock came the stream that still provides water to the Weihenstephan brewery today.
