The Shipyard
Story
The
Shipyard Brewing Company was founded more than 10 years ago by
master brewer Alan Pugsley and entrepreneur Fred Forsley. On April
24, 1994 they brewed their first batch of fine hand-crafted ale
at their facility at 86 Newbury Street in Portland, Maine.
Shipyard began in 1992 at Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brew
Pub in Kennebunk, which is one of Maine's original brew pubs and
working breweries.
When Shipyard expanded in 1994, instead of building a new facility
in an industrial park, Forsley and Pugsley opted to rehabilitate
an old foundry in the heart of Portland's waterfront.
All of Shipyard's recipes are developed by Master Brewer Alan
Pugsley, who is one of the most influential people in the craft
brewing movement in North America.
Pugsley is from England, home of the Ringwood Brewery, where
he apprenticed with the grandfather of the microbrewery movement,
Peter Austin.
Since
moving to the United States over fifteen years ago, Pugsley has
assisted with the establishment of more than 65 microbreweries
and brew pubs throughout the world. A well known trade journal
dubbed Pugsley the "Johnny Appleseed of Brewing," an
acknowledgement of the dominant role he has played in the renaissance
of craft brewing.
Together, Pugsley and his mentor, Peter Austin, have set up at
more than 120 breweries in 17 countries worldwide.
