																							Old Speckled Hen History
Old Speckled Hen traces its roots back to 1711, when John Morland founded a brewery in West Ilsley, Oxfordshire, crafting fine ales and porters for pubs in and around London. By 1885, the brewery had moved to Abingdon and become United Breweries, continuing to expand by acquiring local brewhouses. Through the early 1900s and mid-century, the company flourished, eventually returning to the Morland name. In 1979, to mark the MG Car Company’s 50th anniversary of moving from Oxford to Abingdon, Morland brewed a special commemorative ale, Old Speckled Hen, named after a paint-spattered MG used in the factory. Today, Old Speckled Hen stands as the UK’s #1 selling premium ale, exported to over 43 countries and celebrated as the #3 imported English ale in the United States.
