Carlsberg History

Probably the Best Beer in the World.

Founded by J.C. Jacobsen in 1847 on a hill just outside of Copenhagen, Denmark – The name ‘Carlsberg’ is derived from a combination of J.C.’s son’s name, ‘Carl’, and the location of the brewery, built on a ‘hill’, which translates to ‘bjerg’ in Danish – The two combing to create, ‘Carlsberg’. With a passion in the sciences, Carlsberg has always been at the forefront of advancing beer – in 1875, Carlsberg founded the first brewery laboratory, Carlsberg Laboratory, which paved the way for many groundbreaking scientific methods – in 1883, the original Carlsberg yeast strain was isolated, carlsbergensis. This discovery is said to be the grandfather of modern Lager yeasts. In 1909, the pH scale was invented in the laboratory allowing the brewery to ensure high-quality and consistent products. Carlsberg’s deep roots in brewing sciences and passion for creating world-class brews has solidified it as the best beer in the world. Probably.
