Shipyard History

Kennebunkport, Maine is a small town nestled on the Kennebunk River, offering visitors breathtaking vistas, robust fishing and award-winning beers from Shipyard Brewing Company. The brainchild of entrepreneur Fred Forsley and master brewer Alan Pugsley, Federal Jack’s Brew Pub opened in 1993 just as the nascent Maine brew scene was taking off. Pugsley, a Briton, studied the intricacies of brewing under the tutelage of Peter Austin at the legendary Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England. He was eager to create his own masterpieces after moving to the United States. Thus, Shipyard Brewing Co. was established in the 7-barrel system at Federal Jack’s. By 1996, the increasing popularity of craft beers in the US helped rocket Shipyard into the fastest growing craft brewery in the states.

Shipyard currently boasts a pilot beer facility in Portland, as well as their original facility at the Federal Jack’s location in Kennebunkport Harbor. The brewing company produces 20 varieties of award-winning, hand-crafted beers annually, and remains committed to relying on all natural ingredients that result in flavorful and full-bodied beers beloved by all.
